The Nearest and Farthest side of the Moon.

    1. The Moon always shows us the same face due to tidal locking, which is why we call it the near side. This side has large dark plains called maria formed by ancient volcanic activity, making it smoother and more familiar from Earth.
In contrast, the far side often mistakenly called the dark side receives just as much sunlight but is heavily cratered and rugged, with very few maria.
This striking difference is due to variations in crust thickness and geological history.

The asteroid impact craters make sense, but what’s the explanation for the lack of maria on the far side compared to the near side?

    3. Amazing to think that all those craters are from rocks that could have hit Earth.

    4. I’m glad the moon shows us the more interesting side. Those lakebeds are very pretty.

I really don’t want to believe the side facing us is so beautiful and ethereal and the back is just plane jane like that. Could it be a fake composite? Maybe somethings hiding back there were not supposed to see

    6. Is that a real image of the far side?

It’s honestly suspicious how different the far side looks than the near side. They look like two completely different moons.

There are probably valid scientific explanations for this, but why is there so many more craters on the far side? Why is there no maria on the far side?

Would have thought logically there’d be more impact creators on the backside.

    8. Ya know, to this day I STILL can’t see the man in the moon. Or a crab? I’ve also heard bunny.

The negative space messes with my head too much.

    9. Damn. The near side has been through some things.

    10. Beautiful ❤️

Anyway, so no nazi bases, no aliens, no reptilians, glad a few million loud morons should be busy for a while looking for some other idiotic ideas to talk about.

More meteors etc. hit the outside “dark side”, because its basically locked to facing the outside (it doesn’t rotate) because of tidal lock, so a lot of traveling material from space will hit that side of the moon, before hitting the earth.

On the flip-side, the inward facing part of the moon rarely sees impacts, due to its inward positioning; only material traveling at a suitable angle (to pass the earth and still hit the moon) ever touch this side of the moon…which is why its “smooth” in comparison (the chances of anything traveling at such an angle is far more rare–but not impossible, which is why that side looks cleaner, but not perfect).

    12. Crazy to think, that not one single human had seen the other side of the moon until 60 years ago.

    13. Gosh look at that beautiful little baby taking all those hits for us since forever. Sure is a shame we’re so dead set on plundering her for more of our benefit. Fuck musk

Have we discovered any moon bases?

I know there’s tons of people who came forward from the government saying the lunar bases are top secret but maybe we can see them on the pictures?

    15. Imagine if we’d only ever saw the far side and then saw near.. we’d all think it looks bonkers!

So people are really interested in the moon all of a sudden
